Antique Bottle Identification: Seams and Marks
Antique bottle identification is done from how a bottle was made, not from what it says. The manufacturing evidence — where the mould seams stop, how the lip was formed, and what scar sits on the base — is the most reliable dating method available, and it works even on completely unmarked bottles.
The marks on the base come second. They can confirm a maker and sometimes narrow a year, but they are read against the manufacturing evidence rather than instead of it. Every period given on this page is a broad, overlapping era: these techniques were adopted gradually, at different times in different regions and product lines, so no feature gives a hard cutoff.

Manufacturing evidence: seams, finishes, and base scars
This is the core dating method. Look at the neck first, then the base, and read the two together. The periods below are hedged eras rather than dates, because every one of these transitions overlapped by decades and varied by region, glasshouse, and product.

These are overlapping transitions, not hard cutoffs. Hand and machine production ran side by side for years, some products kept older techniques long after others abandoned them, and regional practice varied. Base and side markings, and what each is worth as evidence
Markings confirm and refine what the manufacturing evidence already told you. Read them in that order, because a mark can be misread far more easily than a seam can.

The long-standing standard reference for American glasshouse marks is Toulouse's Bottle Makers and Their Marks. Where a base mark cannot be matched to a documented glasshouse in a marks reference, unidentified is the correct answer. Attributing a monogram to a plausible-sounding firm is how wrong provenance enters the market and stays there.
What makes a bottle worth money, and what makes it common
Age alone does very little for a bottle's value. Millions of undistinguished bottles survive from every era of mass production. These are the factors that actually separate the two ends of the market.

Cleaning is not a neutral act. Professional tumbling can improve a stained bottle, but it also removes surface character and can disguise damage, and on some collectable types the market prefers an untouched example. Never state a figure from a table like this: condition and rarity decide it.
How to identify it, step by step

Run a fingernail up the side seam
Find exactly where the vertical mould seam stops. Below the lip means hand finishing; over the top of the lip means a fully automatic machine. This one observation splits the entire field in two before anything else is considered.

Examine the finish closely
Under raking light, decide whether the lip was applied as a separate ring, reheated and tooled in place, or moulded in one piece with the body. Photograph the neck straight on, because the junction is easy to see and hard to describe from memory.

Turn it over and read the base
Look for a pontil scar, a suction scar, mould numbers, a maker's mark, and any small isolated digits. Note the position of each mark relative to the others, since layout is part of how base codes are read.

Transcribe every embossed word exactly
Copy the embossing verbatim, including punctuation, line breaks, and any town name. Local bottler and druggist names are where regional value lives, and they are usually the part people paraphrase.

Match the maker's mark in a marks reference
Only after the manufacturing evidence is settled should you look up base initials. A marks reference will give the glasshouse and its operating range, which should agree with what the seams already told you. If it does not, trust the seams.

Assess condition before you assess value
Hold the bottle to the light and check for interior staining, chips on the lip and base edge, bruises, and heavy case wear. Condition moves bottle prices more than almost any other single variable.
Mistakes that cost money
- Reading bubbles and whittle marks in the glass as proof of great age. Both occur in later glass and both are easily reproduced.
- Treating purple sun-coloured glass as old or valuable, when clear glass is routinely irradiated today to force exactly that colour.
- Reading a patent date or a founding date in the embossing as the date the bottle was made. Both were carried in moulds for years afterwards.
- Mistaking a large mould or cavity number on the base for a date code.
- Cleaning or tumbling before the bottle has been identified, which can remove surface character, mask damage, and reduce value on types the market prefers untouched.

Bottles are among the most heavily supplied of all collecting fields, because they were made in enormous numbers and discarded in places that preserved them. Value concentrates narrowly in early, coloured, and locally embossed examples. General secondary-market direction only.

A clear step up from machine-made examples
Early manufacture plus good colour plus strong embossing is the combination that moves a bottle into a real collector market.
Coloured bitters, historical flasks, figural and early poison bottles
Specialist territory, set at auction rather than by any table
These are established collecting categories with their own literature. Anything you suspect belongs here should be assessed by a specialist before it is sold.
Condition and rarity decide it. Interior staining, lip chips, and bruising cut value sharply, while an unusual colour in a known type can transform it. Inspect the lip, heel, base, and high embossing for chips and bruises.
Use backlight to find internal cracks and impact stars.
Note staining, haze, residue, and mineral deposits without aggressive cleaning.
Check whether labels, closures, and contents are original to the bottle.
Record scratches from digging or tumbling separately from manufacturing marks.
Do not polish or grind the glass to improve its appearance.
